Who to Watch:

Kansas is loaded at the guard position, with stars Frank Mason III, Josh Jackson and Devonte’ Graham leading the way. The trio combines to score 50.7 points per game and average 14.4 rebounds and 12.4 assists per game.

Conversely, Purdue’s big men are the focal point, led by Naismith hopeful Caleb Swanigan, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound monster in the post who averages 18.5 points and 12.6 rebounds per game.

Key to the Game:

Kansas likes to play small with four guards in the lineup, while Purdue likes to go big with a 3-4-5 lineup of 6-foot-8 Vince Edwards, 6-foot-9 Swanigan, and 7-foot-2 Isaac Haas. Even if Purdue goes “small” with Edwards at the four and Swanigan at the five, Kansas is at a significant height disadvantage.

Josh Jackson will be a huge factor in this game for the Jayhawks, as he’s a big guard (6-foot-8) who will have to come up big (literally) on the defensive end. If Kansas can play its smaller lineup and stay in the game, the Boilermakers could be in trouble.

It’s also worth noting that Kansas will likely have a strong following at the game — it’s basically a home game played in Kansas City, just about 40 miles from Lawrence.

Kansas and Purdue have met three times before in the NCAA Tournament. Purdue defeated Kansas 83-78 in a 1994 regional semifinal, Kansas took down Purdue 75-61 in a 1997 second-round game, and Kansas earned another tourney win over Purdue in 2012, 63-60 in the second round.
