FA Cup Quarter-final
Chelsea vs Manchester United
Monday, March 13, 2017 at 01:45 PM ET
Stamford Bridge, London.
Back in November 2015, injuries suffered by Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial left Manchester United without a central striker for their trip to Vicarage Road for a Premier League game against Watford. Louis van Gaal, three months before he decided to throw Marcus Rashford into the fray and the then 18-year-old did his duck-to-water act, restricted the teenager to a non-playing substitute’s role and stuck Memphis Depay up front with Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata supporting him from the flanks. United won 2-1 when Troy Deeney, with the clock past 90 minutes, bundled Bastain Schweinsteiger’s cross beyond his own keeper. There is more than one way to skin a cat.
Tonight, though, United face not only the league leaders, but a dilemma. Jose Mourinho has already said that the Europa League, because it earns the winners a Champions League place for next season, is moe valuable to the club than the FA Cup so will not want extra-time to sap the legs of his players before the second leg of their last 16 tie against Rostov on Thursday night. But nor will he want to risk losing any more face at Stamford Bridge after the trouncing last October.
Chelsea, who are at full strength, are formidable opponents at the best of times since those defeats by Liverpool and Arsenal provoked the manager into changing his system. But without a proper centre-forward to occupy David Luiz and knowing that ‘parking the bus’ will take more out of his own players than the opposition, what can he do? Opt for chaos theory and throw Marouane Fellaini up front?
